Back in 2006 I was asked by the owner to revamp the web sites for the Ryedale House Bed and Breakfast and the Cliff House holiday apartments in Whitby, North Yorkshire, because they were ugly, not appearing in the search engine results and web users were not finding them.
I re-wrote the code using more up to date methods, redesigned the styles to make them more attractive, used a little SEO magic, found relevant sites to add links to and found the most relevant site to place a paid advertisement.
The result was that both sites rose up the Google search engine rankings and were appearing in the first two or three pages of search engine results for important keywords. The owner was so pleased she was thinking of dropping her print advertising because almost all her enquiries were coming via the web sites.
These pages have barely been touched since and therefore no longer do so well in the Google results.
